On 1 st July in 2003 and 2004, over 500,000 Hong Kong people marched peacefully on the streets to call for democracy, improvements to their livelihood and express their demands for changes. As Hong Kong people, we stand proudly together and we weather this long and winding path towards universal suffrage. The first time I stood for election in 1985, I proposed, ¡§in times of change, we need to adv ocate for democratic reform and to promote livelihood¡¨. Nineteen years have eclipsed , the se principles have only deepened in meaning.

In the seven years since the handover, under the incompetent leadership of C.H. Tung , cronyism between the government and large corporations is worsening. Hong Kong is heading towards increasing disparity between the rich and the poor. P roperty value has all but evaporated, as many citizens become victims of negative equity. In recent years, many citizens have filed for bankruptcy and then resorted to suicide. These tragedies spark both anger and sadness. The income of the middle class is steadily declining while grassroots citizens have to face wage cuts, unemployment and poverty. Yet through this time corporate profits continue to grow unceasingly.

In Hong Kong, monopolization has affected fair competition . We urgently need a legislative councillor who is able to stand up against monopolization and to defend and promote the rights of ordinary citizens. Since December 2002, I have opted to stand as an independent democratic councillor. I have worked independently on many livelihood and constitutional issues. Although the work is difficult, I remain dedicated and determined to address the needs of the people . As an independent democrat I can freely advocate for the concerns of citizens, without any restraints. I have even called for Chief Executive C. H. Tung to step down.

Despite the challenges of being an independent democratic legislator, I remain committed to work together with the community : ¡§Promoting democracy, upholding livelihood, protecting jobs! Opposing monopoly and cronyism!¡¨ I hope that you will continue to support me so that I can continue to speak up and to advocate for the rights of all citizens. We must ensure that Hong Kong people are able to enjoy freedom, equality and justice in a safe and prosperous Hong Kong.
